Covid 19 has seen been a very stressful time for everyone.  Doctors and support organisations are reporting increased anxiety, depression and difficulty sleeping.  Prescriptions for antidepressants, anxiolytics and sedatives are all up.  But there are many people simply struggling. Trying to keep things going and stay positive despite the current situation.

We hear people saying “don’t give up this will end” and there is no doubt that it will.  In the meantime, it is important to look after ourselves, get plenty of rest, sleep, good nutrition and relaxation.

Not everyone wants to go on prescription medicine and, there are many things that can be done at a natural level to help.  This includes lifestyle actions and exercise, but sometimes a little more is needed.

I am going to speak now from my personal experience.  Like everyone I too have found Covid hard – the lockdown, the restrictions on socialising, mobility and generally life!  Herbal medicine is what has helped me.  Yes, I have gone through periods of waking every couple of hours; or days when my anxiety was high.  In both cases I have made myself a formula which has improved my sleep and lessened my anxiety.

This is not magic – many plants have been proven to have specific effects on the body.  A number of trials have shown passionflower to be as effective as midazolam and oxazepam in helping with anxiety and also with sleep.  Similarly skullcap has been shown to help with anxiety and wood betony with sleep.

Herbal medicine is not woodoo!  It has been used for centuries to help with different ailments.  Many herbs and their constituents are the source of modern day pharmaceuticals.  If you want to try herbal medicine it comes in the form of a liquid formulation.  The regular dose is usually a teaspoon of the personalised formula mixed in water three times daily.  It genuinely can help reduce anxiety and improve sleep – why not give it a try?
