So much of what is making us feel unwell can start in our gut. For a long-time it was believed that there was no connection between the gut and the brain. That what was happening in the gut could not affect our thinking.
If you have ever suffered from stomach or gut problems you will know this is not the case. Gut problems can cause fuzzy thinking, lack of energy, not to mention unpleasant symptoms such as bloating, gas, constipation or diarrhea.
We now know that not only is there a connection between the gut and the brain, but that the microbes in our system play a very important role in a range of processes including immunity, hormone balance, energy, sleep, bone health and of course, digestion.
This is why if you have a problem the gut is always a good place to start. It’s also why naturopaths ask a lot of questions about your digestion and your gut. The gut is where nutrients are absorbed, so if this isn’t working properly you may have problems. It’s also the place where too much can be absorbed if you have inflammation as a result of poor diet, stress, or an intolerance to certain foods.
Does that mean you have to start cutting things out or living a meagre life? The answer is No! Naturopaths go on the basis that everyone is biochemically different. What works for one person may not work for another. Sometimes people come to the clinic saying they have given up a certain food for no reason other than they read somewhere it might help. This is a useful thing to do if that food is causing you problems, but if it didn’t cause you any problems, there isn’t necessarily a reason to give it up (provided it’s not junk food of course!).
It is important to find the cause of the problem, remove it and repair the gut. But remember just removing it doesn’t fully solve the problem, as over time the gut may become aggravated by a new food. It is important to have a multi-strand approach, carefully re-introducing the food under the care of your naturopath.
We will do a full gut analysis – mindful of budget and people’s time, in as much as possible we can do this using a Question and Answer and Food Diary. We do however, offer some gut tests for unresolved problems. See here for further details: https://freshperceptions.com/natural-treatments/it-all-starts-in-the-gut/sibo-test-now-available/
